Slot Machines for the Seneca

In a strategic move to allow the Seneca Gaming Corporation the ability to expand their slot machine operations, the Buffalo Common Council limited the availability of the environmental impact report. The report investigated the effects slot machines, or more pointedly the traffic caused by a slot machine casino, would have on the local environment. The Council supports the Seneca Corp. addition of the slots casino near Fulton Street, so the move positioned the Council as able to approve the slot machines without slots opponents.

The council is comprised of nine councilmen—and when the slot machines came down to the vote, a strong majority of the Council voted in favor of the slot machines. Basically, six voted in favor, and three were opposed to the new casino. Because of the members on the Council right now, a large amount of the slot machine and gaming issues are passing the vote recently. In fact, all of the issues brought by the Seneca Corp. and the mayor were approved. Even though there is a strong base of opposition to the slot machines in the community, the Council is going through on the slot machine casino.

And as is always the case when slot machines are brought into a new area, the proponents cite all of the jobs and revenue the slot machines will bring to the local community. But the county citizens aren’t fooled by the so-called benefits the mayor, the council, and even the Governor are citing. To them, they see land values not being upheld so that the slot machine casino can realize maximum profits, and they predict that the incoming slot machine jobs will actually only serve to displace local higher paying jobs.
