Gambling and slot machines addictions are serious
problems all across the world as evidenced by the recent global
consciousness about the dangers of slot machines. In the United States, just
last week slot machines were an important topic at the polls as voters were
able to choose new slots regulations and Ohio voted not to legalize slot
machines in the state. In other countries, the citizens are having similar
reactions to slot machines and gambling. Russia has seen a surge in slots
over the last few years, and the result is slot addictions and according to
some an increase in crime.
Currently, the Duma plan to regulate the slot machines as a way to perhaps
cut back on some of the excesses many citizens are indulging in—they are
looking to perhaps scale back the number of slot machines operating in the
county in addition to passing restrictions on the machines.
And interestingly, it seems that the slot machines in Russia have created
more than just the anticipated problems. According to the Moscow Serbsky
Psychiatry Institute, the slot machines are the root of two million
Russians’ gambling addictions. Even considering that Moscow is one of the
bigger cities, with roughly 330,000 slot machines addicts, that indicates a
serious problem.
And enforcement of the slot machine legislature is a problem in Russia as
well. One state Duma member went so far as to suggest that the slot machine
parlors be fenced in with concrete walls and barb wire so that underage
citizens cannot make it into the parlors to waste their money on the slot
machines.
