A look at the different states and how they handle the
slot machines within their jurisdiction shows just how varied the process
can be. The slot machines in Missouri for example are probably a safer bet
than the slot machines in Colorado. What causes this discrepancy between the
states? Basically it comes down to the number of employees a state has
working for their respective Divisions of Gaming compared to the number of
slot machines the state operates.
For example, Colorado has made news recently for their understaffing of slot
machine regulators at the Colorado Division of Gaming. At their office, they
have only five staffers overseeing the state’s slot machines. In comparison,
Missouri has a similar number of slot machines however they have a staff of
eleven Gaming employees and a competent system of initial checks on the slot
machines and follow-ups on the slots.
In Missouri every slot is checked prior to use in the casino, and if there
are any problems found with the slot machines, the staffers check up on the
machines to ensure the problems are handled quickly.
Colorado’s problem is turning around quickly though with the recent national
attention on their slot machines. In the past few months, Colorado began
issuing fines to the slot machine casinos that did not comply with state
regulations. Then, after the first round of fines related to violations on
the slot machines, Colorado has plans to fine nine more casinos this month.
Colorado now feels that they are getting a handle on the slot machine
violations running rampant in the state, and Ron Kammerzell, the Director at
the Colorado Division of Gaming commented on the future of slot machine
violations in Colorado. “I see these problems that we're experiencing today
diminishing over the next couple of months. We've sent a message to the
industry - we're not going to tolerate this."
In the future, the Gaming Division will come down much more harshly on slot
machine violators. Casinos facing a second offense with illegal and
defective slot machines could face suspension of their operating license, or
even complete revocation of their slot machine and gaming license.
