It won’t be long until Ohio voters get to choose
whether or not they want slot machines in the state as a way to add
additional money to the state’s scholarship fund. One benefit for the pro
slot machines campaign is the support of retired federal judge Nathaniel
Jones. Jones is a vocal supporter of the Learn and Earn Initiative that
would bring slot machines to Ohio. And the proponents of the campaign can
definitely rest assured that Jones will use any clout he still has to tell
voters the benefits slot machines could have on higher education.
To those who may criticize Jones’ open and vocal support for the slot
machines, Jones shed a little light on his point of view. "Gambling is here.
I'm not one who is in any position of doing anything about the mentality
that supports gambling. I do have an overriding concern for providing
resources for young people to achieve the highest level of education."
As a way to raise support for the slot machines that would bring higher
education funding, can be seen on television ads that urge Ohio voters to
approve Issue 3. According to Jones, the slot machines are “a means of
providing a funding source for scholarships for Ohio children.”
Jones goes on to elaborate on what he thinks the slot machines will
specifically bring to Ohio. Included in his arguments for slot machines is
the positive effect he thinks the funding will have on high school drop out
rates. His support stresses the fact that the slot machines will have a
positive effect on the future of Ohio’s children. He wants to point out that
he is not support gambling carte blanche—the slot machines are merely an
effective solution to the current lack in higher education funding.
