The debate is over for now, and the citizens have let
their voices be heard. There will be no slot machines in Ohio—at least not
at this election. The Learn and Earn committee campaigned hard to win slot
machines to the state as a way to pay for higher education, the opposition
however seems to have swayed the majority of the citizens.
Opponents now speak openly about the Learn and Earn campaign as a “sham.”
According to Senator George Voinovich, “the people of Ohio saw through the
sham and were not fooled.” Voinovich was an outspoken opponent to the slot
machines and even went on tour to speak against the slots campaign and to
warn citizens of the dangerous gambling addictions and crime that could
result from legalization of the slot machines.
The proponents of the slot machines though are only put off for now. The
Learn and Earn campaign spent more than $20 million throughout the course of
the campaign to convince Ohioans that the initiative was a necessary and
even positive move for Ohio, and would put Ohio’s higher education funding
closer to that of other states.
But for now the citizens can rest easy, the racetracks around Cincinnati and
Cleveland will be slot machine free for the foreseeable future.
