Now that the Governor race is over it looks like
Massachusetts could change it’s stance on slot machines. The previous
Governor Mitt Romney was outspoken against slot machines and was firmly
against allowing any sort of slot machines gambling in the state. Now,
however, Governor Elect Deyal Patrick seems to be a bit more lean about
adding the slot machines to the state.
Governor Patrick though isn’t guaranteeing that he approves slot machines
and gambling. His stance on the issue is that there are some definite
benefits to the slot machines, but he also has to weigh the cons in the
situation to make a sound decision on whether the machines will truly aid
the state in the long run.
He went on to further explain his current position, “I have more homework to
do. I’ve spent more time, candidly, with the opponents than I have with the
proponents, and the issues raised about what the social costs really are . .
. not that I am opposed to gambling.” So essentially he's letting people
know that he is still looking into this matter.
So for the state racetracks, this could be a huge positive prospect for
them—they have been pursuing slot machines at the tracks for several years
now as a way to offset the low revenue from the tracks themselves. The
racetracks feel that legalizing the slot machines could be the only way to
bring in enough revenue for the tracks to even remain in operation, and
shutting down the tracks would result in job losses throughout the state." slot machines
