Some are Bitter About Maine's Slot Machines

Hollywood Slots has had a phenomenal in terms of revenue from their slot machines—and though the operators find that a plus, others are criticizing the amount of money citizens spent in the casino this year rather than in local businesses. Hollywood Slots managed to draw in much more business than they initially anticipated, and not only revenue, but more patrons visited the slot machine facility than estimates predicted.

According to the statistics, over 860,000 gamblers have placed more than $500 million in wagers at the facility in Bangor, Maine. Now slot machine proponents feel that Maine received more than their fare share of the slot machine revenue—their cut was $17 million.

Opponents though add other figures into the equation. Rather than just looking at the slot machine revenue, opponents look at the $35 million that citizens in Maine lost not only to a gambling and slot machine facility, but to make matters worse, the corporation isn’t even based in the state.

Some feel that the money spent on the slot machines could have gone toward purchases within the state rather than the out-of-state corporation. And that $35 million went toward fueling gambling addictions and other gambling related crime. The increase in gambling and slot machine related problems are making citizens wonder if the revenue from the slot machine casino is worth the price citizens are now paying.
