In terms of sheer revenue from slot machines and
gambling, it looks like Macau may bring in more revenue this year than Las
Vegas. Vegas currently holds the title as the largest city for slot machines
and gambling in the world. Macau is currently in second place, but not very
far behind, and because Macau is currently undergoing extensive expansions,
this year Macau could move in to the top position in slot machines and
gaming revenue.
Macau has certainly expanded in recent years, going from just a tiny town
few had really heard of to the focal point for gambling and slot machines in
China. Part of why Macau expanded so rapidly is because it is the only place
in China to gamble. Once slot machines and gambling were legalized in the
small colony, the industry just exploded. Some of the largest casinos and
resorts reside on the island and Macau is often the retreat gamblers prefer
if they have to travel to play slot machines.
The slot machines and gambling revenue is close for the two locations, Las
Vegas and Macau. Last year Vegas was looking at roughly $6.4 billion in
revenue while Macau was only slightly behind with $6 billion. In addition to
an anticipated increase in patrons going to the colony, Macau will open
several more casinos complete with slot machines on the Cotai Strip.
According to Ciaran Carruthers, SVP of Galaxy Resort, “Macau over the next
few years is going to develop into something unique and will neither be a
replica of Las Vegas, Atlantic City or Australian gaming." Carruthers went
on to say, "how Macau changes and develops will be very closely linked to
the change and development in China. Right now most of our players are from
the middle and lower classes in China, and it is the ever growing middle
class that will drive growth here.”
