Keep Slot Machines Out of Nebraska!

Like many states, the temptation to approve slot machines is high. Even though there are definite drawbacks to the citizens—things like slot machines and gambling addictions, the revenue slot machines can bring in can make a world of difference in states with budgets that just don’t seem to cover everything they need to. In Nebraska, the slot machines debate has come up more than once in the recent past—but anti-slot machines groups like Gambling with the Good Life have done their job at fighting the slots and blocking the approval of slot machines anytime the issue comes up.

But now the group may have something to actually be concerned about. The new Initiative Measure 421 may be harder than the rest to defeat. This measure on the up side does not push for bringing in slot machines carte blanche—in fact the proponents argue that the video keno stations aren’t even akin to slot machines.

But the opposition isn’t buying it. They believe the video keno stations are just an alternative to the slot machines that will bring the same gambling issues. Also, the initiative proposes making the stations only available where a licensed keno dealer is located—but there are a lot of licensed dealers. Though the proponents make it seem like the player stations wouldn’t be that pervasive, there are 600 licensed keno locations that can now expand and take on as many of the slot machines devices as they choose.

Even more disconcerting for the anti-slot machines group is the lack of legislation that will regulate the player stations. Currently, there is now legislation that prohibits the player machines from being easily turned into slot machines—all the operators have to do is replace the screen with the reels traditional to slot machines." slot machines
