Guam Lawsuit Over Slot Machines

What do you do when your right to free speech is infringed upon? Well if you are Jackie Marati, and you want to make your opposition to the slot machines Proposal B on the ballot in the upcoming election, you fight back against the corporations. Guam Greyhound (the company seeking legalization of slot machines at the Guam Greyhound racetrack) filed a lawsuit against Marati that she believes is their ploy to keep her outspoken opposition to the slot machines quiet until after the November 7th elections.

But it appears that Guam Greyhound didn’t anticipate Marati’s reaction to the lawsuit. Rather than take the lawsuit lying down, Marati fought back using Guam’s anti-SLAPP statute as grounds for continuing her anti-slot machines message. The anti-SLAPP statute boils down to this: a person can not be silenced for voicing their opinion. So even though Guam Greyhound doesn’t like what she has to say about the slot machines the law protects Marati’s right to free speech. So now, considering they actually gave Marati a reason to fight back, all they managed to do was give her access to a larger portion of the voting public to spread her anti-slot machines message.

Anita Arriola, Marati’s lawyer has no doubts as to why Guam Greyhound filed the lawsuit against the known slot machines opposer. “Make no mistake about it, John Baldwin and the Guam Greyhound's suit against Marati is nothing more than an attempt to shut her up." slot machines
