The votes have been tallied, the voting public has
united against bringing slot machines into Guam. Though the slot machines
would allegedly increase tourism and bring in much needed revenue, the
citizens voted to keep slot machines out of the Guam Greyhound racetrack.
The slot machine initiative was supported by the Committee to Revitalize
Tourism. Termed Proposal B, the proposal would have allowed for expansions
at the racetrack in the form of a slot machines parlor, and even
restaurants—and down the line, the expansions would have even continued to
perhaps include more shopping and hotels. The Committee though speaks out on
the decision voters made on the 2006 ballot. According to spokesman Jon
Anderson, “clearly Guam Greyhound is an ongoing business and will continue
to operate and we do have some plans for improvement and upgrade here at
Guam Greyhound. But we're going to go forward regardless of the outcome of
Proposal 'B'. Our plans to revitalize Guam Greyhound, and Guam tourism, in
turn would have moved along a lot faster had the proposal passed."
The Committee won’t go so far as to say that they expected the outcome, but
they do recognize that it did take a lot of effort to even get the slot
machines onto the 2006 ballot. Guam isn’t the only one that voted down slot
machines on this ballot—in a similar move, Ohioans also voted against
bringing in slot machines.
