Slot Machines are Not For Dixon Downs

As Magna Entertainment Corporation makes plans to add a racetrack in Dixon City, a few citizens are concerned about Magna’s history of bringing in slot machines instead of just a racetrack. But for now the focus isn’t on the slot machines but rather on the fact that after six years of debate and resubmitting requests, the Dixon City Council has finally approved the requests for a racetrack in Dixon City. And it seems that the racetrack was approved by a large majority since only one councilman is reported to have voted against the new racetrack.

That councilman, Steve Alexander, is concerned with the possible traffic and noise problems. Unlike some of the citizen’s concerns about bringing in slot machines, Alexander focuses on the negative effects the racetrack will have on the county. Though Alexander is “pro-business…[he] just doesn’t think the city is prepared for this project.” Alexander feels that there were valid issues about the racetrack that were not properly addressed by the council before the racetrack was approved. One of the issues that none of the councilmen seemed overly concerned about: the slot machines.

Part of the reason why the councilmen are positive that they slot machines will not be an issue is because Magna has assured the councilmen and the citizens of Dixon County that it has no plans to add slot machines to the racetrack. Magna is happy with the outcome as it stands, they are more than pleased to operate the racetrack. Magna sincerely believes that the racetrack will boost the economy in Dixon County—they believe in the jobs they are bringing and the additional revenue.
