Cuyahoga Stopped Slot Machines

Voters put up a stand at last week’s elections by voting no to Ohio’s Issue 3, or what was more widely known as the Learn and Earn campaign. Some though were very surprised that slot machines didn’t pass. Analysts have concluded that the unanticipated weak support in Cuyahoga County may have turned the tides against the slot machines. Many expected high voter support in Cuyahoga County because of it would have benefited the most from the addition of slot machines.

Now that the slot machines have not passed, the slots supporters are looking at the possible flaws in the proposal that could account for why voters didn’t support the proposed slot machines. Some speculate that because the benefit of the slot machines centered on Cleveland rather than all of Ohio, many voters felt the proposal was unfair. According to retired lobbyist Paul Tipps, “the next package will not be Cleveland-centric. It can't be. That's one lesson you've got to learn."

According to the statistics after the votes were in, the slot machines lost 57 percent to 43 percent across the state. And in the Greater Cleveland counties—where there was expected to be a majority of slot machines approval, only 48 percent voted in favor of slots.
