The MGM Mirage is selling some of its slot machines,
but before you start thinking that the MGM may be having financial
difficulties, the opposite is actually true. MGM’s decision to sell some of
their lower end slot machine casinos to Herbst Gaming reflects their new
focus on higher end resort casinos and mixed entertainment resorts. Herbst’s
reputation makes them the perfect company to purchase some of the MGM’s
extra slot machines holdings.
Part of Herbst’s current reputation centers on roadside slot machines as
well as slot machines and gambling devices in gas stations and casinos not
in prestigious gaming areas like Las Vegas. Though the slot machines being
sold to Herbst are profitable for the MGM Mirage, they are not part of the
new image, and they aren’t always worth the effort for the MGM considering
their out-of-the-way location.
John Restrepo of the Restrepo Consulting Group elaborated on the MGM’s new
image. "It makes sense that they would sell [the slot machines]. They're
taking their product to a whole new level — high-end, full-service resorts
and mixed-use entertainment resorts [and] the properties out there did not
meet that criterion."
The slot machines and property up for sale is what can only be called a
“pit-stop” for the patrons who stop at the machines as they drive by. The
slot machines do bring in a tidy profit of nearly $40 million in just slot
machine revenue—so the Primm slot machines are definitely a fair deal for
Herbst as well as MGM Mirage.
