Who Has Coin-less Slot Machines

The overhauling process has begun and coin operated slot machines are on the way out. Slot machines in some of the major casinos have already been switched, and a few of the major casinos announced plans for a complete upgrade on all of their existing slot machines.

The MGM Mirage announced that it plans to upgrade 90% of the existing 18,000 slot machines. Though a few slot machine enthusiasts claim the slot machine experience will be altered forever without the sound of coins dropping when patrons hit the jackpot, the casinos see the new paperless slot machines as the way of the future. In addition to the MGM Mirage, the other casinos operated by the parent company will also benefit from a slot machine upgrade. Sisters companies the Bellagio and the MGM Grand, and some of the 14 other casinos anticipate the switchover soon.

The technology for the ticket-in/ticket-out slot machines comes from slot machine manufacturer IGT. IGT’s EZ Pay Ticket System is installed in 2/3 of all of IGT’s slot machines. IGT’s marketing manager Brian Casey commented that the number of coin-less slot machines is steadily increasing across the United States. Roughly 130,000 of the 700,000 slot machines are already coin-less. So what is the benefit of coin-less slot machines? Monet stated, "An individual approaching the cage to cash in a big bucket of coins might bump into somebody else and drop [them] all over the floor. That doesn't happen with the new technology."
