Some of Broward's Slot Machines Delayed

With Gulfstream Park already open to the public for slot machines gaming, it seems like Dania Jai-Alai is a tad behind. Dania plans to open their slot machines in 2008—the last of the pari-mutuels in Broward County to plan their opening. Mardi Gras Racetrack and Gaming Center is the next of the racetracks to open—it will open its doors in early December with nearly a full load of slot machines.
Mardi Gras will have 1,147 slot machines at its opening, closer to the maximum amount of slot machines Broward voters approved (1,500 slot machines per pari-mutuel) than Gulfstream Park opened with.

But Dania had a few extra hoops to jump through so-to-speak before the slot machines were approved. Just last week the Dania Beach commissioners approved the slots and casino complex in a unanimous decision to allow the facility to expand and develop the new complex. Because of laws in Florida that concern pari-mutuels the jai alai facility did not have to push the new plans through the city’s Planning and zoning board.

The jai-alai facility is a unique twist on the traditional racetrack and slot machine facilities that crop up in many states. This facility will be unique in its 1,000 seat jai-alai fronton in addition to the 1,500 slot machines planned. Boyd Gaming, based out of Las Vegas, estimates the project will cost roughly $200 million but considers the location and novel.ty of slots in Florida to be well worth the development price.

Part of the delay for Dania will be in the additions the current jai-alai facility to make room for the slot machines, additional gambling areas, a night club, bar, and two planned upscale restaurants. Plus Boyd Gaming is still in the process of purchasing the facility and will still be looking for approval to operate the slot machines at the fronton. Slot machines spread throughout the world.
