The day has finally arrived for Broward County
residents awaiting the opening of two slot machine casinos. Of the few slot
machine licenses granted in the County, the Mardi Gras Racetrack and Gaming
Center may be the first to open its door for slot machine business. Mardi
Gras plans to open in late November with a full slot machine area—1,100 slot
machines, and other gaming activities.
The Vice President of the Mardi Gras Racetrack commented on the relief now
that the racetrack actually has slot machine approval. The slot machine
license now gives the racetrack the assurance needed to begin buying the
slot machines. And as the first of the companies granted slot machine
licenses Mardi Gras anticipates much initial and long-term support for the
slot machines. The location of the casino will also add to the success of
the slot machine parlor—conveniently situated in Hallandale by the old
Hollywood Greyhound Track.
As positive as the slot machines in Broward County are, many racetrack
patrons feel the slot machines may detract from the betting system already
in place. Others feel the slot machines will only revive the racetrack,
adding to the purse sizes and renewing interest in horse racing as well as
slot machines.
