Concerned citizens and a local taskforce worry that the
addition of a slot machine casino in North Shore could bring traffic
problems. The Pittsburgh Gaming Task Force sent its conclusion to the
Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board recently as part of the issues for the
Gaming Control Board to taking into consideration when deciding which of the
three bidders to award the slot machine license to.
PITG Gaming LLC is one of the three potential owners of the North Shore slot
machine casino site, and they do not agree with the task force’s evaluation
that the potential casino site could face traffic problems. According to
PITG, the North Shore location is perhaps the most ideal site in terms of
traffic. The proposed location is adjacent to Interstate 279, and PITG says
in a letter to the Gaming Control Board that they have solutions to some of
the traffic issues brought up by the task force.
The potential slot machines site is very close to two other large,
traffic-heavy locations, the Carnegie Science Center, Heinz Field and PNC
Park. The taskforce notes that there is already heavy traffic relating to
the sporting events at the field, and PITG’s Majestic Star slot machine
casino could only add to this.
The task force though did have some positive notes for the slot machine
casino, they just really feel like the traffic concerns are important and
need to be addressed. According to the task force’s letter, "Our positive
evaluation of the Majestic Star proposal is qualified by the unresolved
traffic concerns. The North Side neighborhood where the proposed casino
would be located is strongly impacted by heavy traffic uses on certain days
because of sporting events." The letter went on to state that the “road
system around the proposed casino requires significant alteration” further
compounds the issue.
