A recent study conducted by a Canadian/Australian
research team is being likened to a catastrophe for the gaming and slot
machine industry. The study takes an in depth look at VTR’s, or rather the
video lottery terminals (also known as slot machines), currently operating
in slot machine casinos, and independent establishments like bars and
lounges across the United States.
The report looks into what specifically the slot machines lead the players
to believe as they are playing the machines. According to interpretation of
the report, some are saying that the slot machines are purposefully
programmed to in a way that leads a player to believe they are about to hit
the jackpot. Considering that a player can never really tell if a machine is
“due” to hit the jackpot, many say that players are sucked into the game
waiting for the jackpot.
Slot machines have had poor reputations in the industry for a while now.
Many who are critical of the slot machine industry, including the Christian
right, site slot machines as the most addictive form of gambling, placing
slots over card games and lotteries. Gambling addiction centers state that
as the slot machine industry expands, slots addictions at centers are
increasing exponentially.
The machines cause such a problem that some countries have banned the slot
machines altogether. New Zealand and Australia banned the machines already,
and the citizens in Ohio will vote next week on whether to bring slot
machines to the state as a way to pay for college scholarships and higher
education.
