Who is Getting the Slots in Ohio?

The Issue 3 debate wages on with either side putting up valid claims to why 31,500 slot machines should or should not be legalized in Ohio. But what about the establishments and racetracks that will run the slot machines once legalized. Who are they, and how much will slot machines help their business?

Well two of Ohio’s racetracks, Lebanon Raceway and River Downs, will expand their operations to include a fuller gaming experience. The addition of hotels, restaurants, bars, and 3,500 slot machines in each of the racetracks could bring as many as 1,000 jobs at each racetrack. So these two racetracks are supporting the slot machine amendment on the basis that both of the towns need more working class jobs and the additional business will support the fledging racetrack attendance in recent years.

Other areas with a say in how the addition of slot machines will affect business include full service casinos like Argosy and other neighboring casinos. Slot machines pull in a large portion of the revenue at casinos, and it is still unknown if there is enough of a demand for slot machine gambling to support the current full-service casinos in addition to the anticipated 31,500 slots.
