According to Pennsylvania’s Governor Rendell the
presence of slot machines brings “brightness and cheer” into what he terms a
senior citizens “gray [life].” Not everyone was happy with the terminology
used in that statement that implies that without slot machines seniors would
have no other fulfillments. Gov. Rendell’s republican opponent in the
governor race, Lynn Swan, took particular exception to Rendell’s statement.
Leonardo Alcivar, a campaign spokesman for Swan noted “Straight talk is one
thing, but diminishing the value and the lives of our senior citizens is
offensive.” The comment references the senior citizens who take the bus into
Atlantic City to play the slot machines. In a rebuttal to the harsh
criticism of his comment the Governor’s campaign spokesperson assured the
public that the Governor only intended to imply that many seniors use the
slot machines as a form of entertainment. And in response to Swan’s campaign
asking for an apology, Governor Rendell does not intend to apologize for the
comment.
Specifically Governor Rendell made the following observations: “These are
people who lead very gray lives. They don't see their sons and daughters
very much. They don't have much social interaction. There's not a whole lot
of good things that happen in their month. But if you put them on the bus,
they're excited. They're happy. They have fun. They see bright lights. They
hear music. They pull that slot machine and with each pull they think they
have a chance to win. ... It's unbelievable what brightness and cheer it
brings to older Pennsylvanians.”
