Rendell Fights for State Zoning

Governor Rendell of Pennsylvania once again shows concerns about the state’s gambling and slot machine laws. Currently, the bill going through the Senate does not give the Gaming Control Board control over all of the new slot machine casinos zoning. In the bill, the Gaming Control Board only has control over two of the 14 future gambling locations across the state. And the Governor fears that local government zoning means that zoning in areas like Philadelphia could be mismanaged.

Previously, Rendell requested that before the Senate move forward on gambling and slot machine laws, that the state hold four legislative caucuses. He wrote the following, "The Senate moved forward with [the bill] notwithstanding the fact that full and deliberate discussions among all four legislative caucuses and the administration regarding the legislation, which I have been calling for since the early part of this year, have not occurred."

Supporters of the bill state that Rendell is foreseeing non-existent problems. The bill passed the Senate by a large majority; many cite this fact as proof that the bill has merit.
