Proposal B Goes to Forum

The debate about bringing slot machines to Guam continues—everyone has a say on whether or not the Guam Greyhound racetrack should add 200 slot machines to their existing racetrack. Many voters have problems sorting out the pros and cons though, so below you will find the arguments for the proponents (those for bringing slot machines to Guam) and the opponents (those against bringing slot machines to Guam).

PROPONENTS
• Millions of dollars in tax collections to the government (an estimated $3 million/year)
• An anticipated 500 new jobs
• The slot machines would boost the economy
• Guam Greyhound could become a tourist destination

OPPONENTS
• Guam Greyhound would only be paying 10% in taxes whereas other slot machine locations pay approximately 30%
• The 500 new jobs is valid only if it truly takes 2.5 people per slot machine to operate
• The boost in jobs will be counteracted by the job loss in other areas due to gambling addictions

Many debaters at the forum ranged from extremely concerned to highly excited about the slot machines. This still very diverse reactions proves that Guam is still divided on this slot machine issue, and more debate and consideration must be given to this issue before the November 7 vote.
