The Pennsylvania House and Senate still disagree over
what exact provisions the new slot machine legislation should include. As it
stands the House and Senate seem to be bouncing the bill between themselves
for the last several months. As the legislative session comes to an end
within a month it looks like they may come to a compromise on the slot
machine reform.
Some of the disagreements are valid however inconvenient it may seem. The
House for example just altered the bill in order to strengthen the local
indoor smoking ban and to ensure that casinos are included in this ban.
Other changes include legislation that will require slot machine and gaming
lobbyists to disclose the funds they use to influence policymakers.
Part of impetus for finishing the slot machine legislature lies in the
upcoming election. Once the slot machine reform is finished legislators are
eager to focus time and attention on their campaigns. So for those in the
industry awaiting the slot machine reform, the legislation hopefully only
has one more Senate vote before it is presented to Governor Ed Rendell for
approval.
