MGN Technologies (also operates as Mobil Gaming Now)
released a statement recently to counter inquires that its operation might
violate the Safe Port Act, voted on by Congress on September 30, 2006.
According to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act credit card
companies can not accept online transactions for gambling
activities—basically Americans can no longer gamble online with money they
often can’t afford to payback.
According to MGN, their offerings include online sweepstakes games rather
than online gambling. These sweepstakes allow players to compete for points
and prizes without violating the new Act. According to the CEO of MGN Mark
Jensen, "[MGN’s] sweepstakes game is 100% legal because it's based on
sweepstakes and not gambling. It doesn't ask a player for consideration to
play the game. The passing of the new Act is a very positive event for MGN.
We are positioned to offer gaming companies a legal game where players have
a monetary incentive to play as well as the spirit of competition."
Jensen went on to elaborate on the extent of internet gambling in the United
States and MGN’s new place in online gaming. "An estimated 23 million
Americans play Internet poker every day according to a study from the
American Gaming Association. The number of Americans gambling online has
grown 20 percent every year, to the point where they're now wagering $6
billion annually. The new Act threatens this business. MGN Technologies
offers a solution for Internet gaming companies with our sweepstakes game."
MGN has spent the last two years developing sweepstakes games that avoid the
grey area of legislation that targets online slot machine type games and
other gambling activities. Rather then count on revenue from online
gambling, MGN looked ahead at the possibility of US legislation prohibiting
online gambling to develop games that still bring in revenue without
breaking the law.
