Last July Knapp found himself in a heap of trouble when
undercover police officers discovered Knapp operating illegal slot machines
out of his convenience store, Spuds Convenience Store. The undercover
officers went into Knapp’s store and played the slot machines as a way of
verifying that the slot machines were operating as a gambling device. Once
discovered, officers seized the slot machines and arrested Knapp.
Knapp admitted on tape that he was aware that the slot machines were illegal
yet operated them anyway. He even went so far as to move the slot machines
to a different location as a way to “avoid state police detection.” The
charge is serious and could result in jail time if Knapp is found guilty of
his charges which include “possession of apparatus for registering bets.”
The penalty for this charge can be a $3,000 fine and up to three year in
hail.
And chances are, Knapp is guilty. In 1988 Knapp was found guilty of
possessing illegal gambling paraphernalia, and though slot machines were not
among the charges in the 80’s, he did plead guilty and pay a hefty fine for
the infraction.
