Internet Gambling Enforcement Act

Big news in the gambling and slot machine industry—less than two weeks ago the United States Congress passed The Safe Port Act, now pending Presidential approval, the Safe Port Act may become a reality. Certain provisions within the Act could have online slot machine and gaming companies restructuring their online gaming offerings. No company wants to be used as an example for enforcement of the Act, so many are scurrying to prove to the public that they comply with the provision within the act that specifically targets online gambling transactions.

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 essentially uses the credit card companies to curb online gambling and online slot machine gaming. According to this provision, credit card companies are prohibited from processing any online gambling transactions. This could be a huge step forward for Americans with gambling addictions—now they cannot push themselves into bankruptcy and debt from the comfort of their own home. The United States saw a surge in online gambling activates in the last decade, and rather than going to the casinos and slot machines to gamble their money, many serious addicts began to use their credit cards to gamble money they didn’t even have.

This Act is ensures that no online gambling site can lead an American into credit card debt. And considering other acts Congress has passed in the last few years, especially the new bankruptcy legislation, Americans might want to consider themselves lucky that Congress has taken a proactive stance on the online slot machine gaming and gambling problems. But don’t stress if your addicted to the game and not just the gambling—these sites still allow gamers to play these glitzy games, but instead of actual money, most use a credit system so that gamers can track how much money they may have won on the game.

And for those who are concerned that the Safe Port Act may force some businesses into bankruptcy, think again. Though Americans can’t gamble online, the rest of the world still uses these online sites to gamble—and just like land-based casinos and slot machine operations, the profits are in the millions.
