Intense Opposition to Video Keno Slots

Ballot initiative #421 in Nebraska has coalitions forming all over the state; besides the slot machine manufacturers and casinos, the majority of the public are opposed. Slot machines always cause heated debate when they are proposed within communities and states, and the question is raised, are the slot machines worth the gambling addictions and associated problems?

On Oct 6, 2006, press conferences held in Nebraska announced that a Religious Coalition has formed with the primary purpose of informing Nebraska citizens of the harm that slot machines could bring to their community. Certain groups even have some openly harsh words to say about the prospect of slot machines in Nebraska. The Executive Director of Gambling with the Good Life, Pat Loontjer was one of the more outspoken of the slot machine opposition:

In 2004 we fought the gambling industry’s attempt to destroy our ‘good life’ with thousands of slot machines. At that time we formed the largest coalition ever gathered in the state. I am happy to announce today that the largest of the coalitions, that of religious leaders, has once again decided to unite against the dangerous threat of Video Keno Slots. This new statewide coalition representing almost every denomination in the state will actively work to inform their members of the dangers that slot machines, the crack cocaine of gambling, will inflict on the families and how it will harm the economy of our great state. When other states are throwing them out because of the addiction they bring, why would Nebraska want to sign on for this misery? The Video Keno Slot Machine promoters have the money but we have the truth and the Religious Leaders United Coalition will help us spread that truth to every community.”
