IGT, International Game Technology will be acquiring
the electronic gaming technology developed by Novomatic. This new technology
is similar to slot machine technology and will allow IGT to compete in this
rapidly growing field on slot machine-type gaming. The machines are similar
to slot machines in that they do not require a dealer, or any specific human
operator, and the new technologies will allow gamers to interface through
the machine while playing games such as blackjack and roulette.
IGT’s competition mainly centers on Shuffle Master because this company
already has a foothold in the electronic table gaming industry. IGT is
getting into the game at just the right time as Shuffle Master has only seen
the demand for these slot machine type games increase within the last year.
Shuffle Master expanded the slot machine type gaming experience in
California among other areas—some of the new dealer-less games being offered
at casinos include Three Card Poker and Let It Ride.
As Shuffle Master expands into Delaware with a contract for 54 electronic
gaming tables, IGT sees that there is definite potential for this new
technology within the existing casino industry. For this reason though IGT
needs to really focus these next few months on getting a toehold on this
market before Shuffle Master corners the market with exclusive distribution
deals with the various states.
