The Guam Basketball Confederation is the newest place
that slot machine gambling is having an influence in Guam. Currently,
whether or not to bring slot machines to the Guam Greyhound dog racing track
has many debating how slot machine gambling will revitalize the community.
The chairman of the Committee to Revitalize Tourism in Guam is pushing
proposal B, or its formal title “Initiative to Revitalize Tourism in Guam
and Generate Revenue for Health Care and Public Education by Allowing Slot
Machine Gaming.” As a part of the proposal, 10 percent of the revenue from
the slot machines would go directly to the government to use “to subsidize
(1) health care costs, including prescription drugs for Guam residents, (2)
education, including improvements to the physical condition of Guam schools,
and (3) other programs for the general well-being of the territory."
The chairman John Calvo’s latest efforts on behalf of this slot machine
proposal include donating $1,000 to the Guam Basketball Confederation during
half-time. The game took place at the University of Guam field house.
