Atlantic City Revenue Means More Money for Seniors

Depending on what state you live in, if you have casinos and slot machines, chances are some of that revenue is going back to the community. And for seniors and the disabled in New Jersey, Atlantic City’s increase in revenue means more services and programs.

Slot machine revenue from the 12 casinos brought in over $340 million and another $124.9 came from other areas of the casinos. This is a substantial increase from percentages last year—slot machines are up 8.2 percent. The great thing about slot machines and casinos, even though more societal problems crop up in the form of gambling addictions, the slot machine revenue really does help other areas.

New Jersey is not the only state to use a percentage of slot machine revenue to benefit other statewide programs. Florida uses the lottery as a way to provide scholarships for higher education in the form of Florida Bright Futures funding. A similar program in Ohio is currently under debate and will be voted upon next month. The Ohio program would allocate a large percentage of slot machine revenue toward higher education—nicknamed Ohio’s Learn and Earn campaign.

So needless to say, the 9.2 percent increase in revenues from this month last year will bring close to $38 million for New Jersey’s seniors and disabled.
