More Payout Percentage Than Meets the Eye

Understanding that a slot machines payout percentage is about more than just the amount of pay outs per amount of coins put into a machine is very important.  First of all, players need to be aware that payout percentages are not absolute values.  What this means is that a slot machine may deliver a payout percentage that is far below the actual average over a certain period of time.  Likewise, this machine will also deliver payouts that are far above the average percent.  Over an extended period of time (one month is acceptable), the slot machines will average for the payout percentage that you will see casinos advertise.

One thing to keep in mind about payout percentage advertisements which look very tempting are the words "up to", meaning that casinos will often say their slot machines payout "up to" so and so percent.  This does not mean these machines will even payout that percentage over the course of the bigger picture.  It just means their machines will pay that percentage of money out at certain times.

The typical range for slot machine payouts is from 93.7% to 98.5% (although online casinos will generally give payouts in the 96-98% range, and sometimes over 100%).  Therefore, in terms of playing more online slot machines or land-based slots, players should consider giving the online slots a go more often, if at all possible.  Another thing to remember about payout percentage for slot machines is that statistical research shows that higher denomination machines ($5 and higher) tend to have better payout percentages in the higher end of the scale.
