Slots Machines in Maryland

Has American politics grown so unbalanced that one man can stop the majority?  So it would seem in the case of Maryland, where a debate about slot machines has been ongoing for nearly four years.  Since November of 2002, Maryland has been trying to pass legislation that would make slots legal once and for all.  With most of the pressure on Maryland governor, Robert Ehrlich - who promised to make their legalization a focus of his term - nobody really knows whether slots will survive in Maryland.

And one of the biggest obstacles to giving slot machines the green light is one man - Michael E. Busch.  Using his authority as House Speaker, Busch was able to keep the issue of slots from even entering the House Floor for nearly two years.  And when he finally gave in to the outcry of his constituents and fellow Representatives of the House, he introduced legislation that he knew would not gel with Ehrlich and Senate President, Thomas Miller.

And with Busch refusing to compromise on a fair proposal, it most assuredly seems that American politics have let the views of single individuals shape how "The People" want to live their lives.  With the legalization of slot machines still a definite reality in Maryland, it would be nice to see that the people get what they want.  And while the race tracks in Maryland are still buzzing with activity, Marylanders have expressed interest in having slots spread out in the state.  In other words, they simply do not want them too close to everyday, normal life.  Is that asking too much?
